Briefing on Indian Tribes and Climate Change Legislation

Wednesday, September 9, 2009

2:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Senate Indian Affairs Committee Room, SD-628

Sponsored by Senators Tom Udall (D-NM) and Max Baucus (D-MT)

All Senators, Senate Staff and interested parties are invited to attend a briefing about tribal provisions in climate change legislation.

Indian tribes in the United States manage more than 95 million acres of natural-resource rich land and have thousands of years of experience adapting to changes in the landscape. Tribes must now use this same experience to learn how to adapt to the disproportionate environmental and economic impacts facig their communities as a result of climate change. Please join us for a Wednesday afternoon briefing during which tribal leaders and representatives will share their perspective on how federal climate legislation can help them address the adverse impacts of climate change facing tribal communities.

- Senator Tom Udall

2) Brief Overview of the Presentations
- Bob Gruenig, National Tribal Environmental Council

3) Clean Energy and Energy Efficiency
- Keith Harper (Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma), Kilpatrick Stockton
- Alex Pearl (Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma), Kilpatrick Stockton
